The full quote from James Madison, regarded as the Father of Our Constitution, addresses it succinctly.

If Men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and the next place, oblige it to control itself.

Today’s verse has a timeless lesson that has been woven into our Constitution.

Do you see it? Want it? Need it? Protect and defend it? I hope so.

We sharpen each other’s thoughts through discussions of ideas and not their suppression.
So when our government and others shut you up and close you down, we get dull and bad choices are made.
Freedom of speech, assembly, and worship are the means by which we not just live, but thrive.
The Founding Fathers were spot on. These truths were once self-evident and timeless.
The American Revolution was fought to gain these freedoms when denied them by the Crown.
These plus the struggle for a representative government to preserve them following timeless and eternal truths.
The fight is on.
