This is the story of David and Goliath.  It takes place in the land given to the Israelites by God.  This Promised Land was filled with rolling hills and vast deserts, with many nations fighting over that land.

There was a young boy named David. David wasn’t a mighty warrior or a famous leader. No, he was a shepherd, spending his days in the sunshine, looking after his family’s flock of sheep. He was the youngest of eight brothers, often overlooked and underestimated. But David had something special inside him—a heart filled with faith and courage as vast as the stars.

David’s people, the Israelites, were in big trouble. They were at war with the Philistines.  The Philistine Army was lined up on one side of the valley with the Israelite Army on the other.  The Israelites were facing a huge problem, literally! The Philistines had a great warrior, a giant named Goliath.  He was taller than the tallest tree you can imagine and more powerful than the mightiest animal in the forest.  Every morning, the Israelites would look out over the valley and see Goliath, wearing his armor and shield, shining in the sun.  Goliath would challenge the Israelites.  He would stomp out and roar, “Send me someone to fight! If he wins, we will be your slaves, but if I win, you will be our slaves!” But every one of the Israelites was too afraid to face him, even the bravest soldiers.

Let’s return to our friend David, the young shepherd boy.  One day, while delivering food to his brothers in the Israelite army, he heard Goliath’s booming challenge. Instead of fear, a spark of bravery lit within him. David thought, “Someone should stand up to that bully! Why is he insulting our people and our God?” With a heart beating with courage and trust in God, David decided, “I will fight Goliath!”

Can you imagine? A young boy, armed with only faith, willing to face a towering giant! When King Saul, the leader of Israel’s army, heard this, he said, “You’re just a boy, and Goliath is a mighty warrior.” But David replied, “I have fought lions and bears to protect my sheep. God kept me safe then and will keep me safe now.”

King Saul reluctantly agreed to let David fight Goliath and offered David his armor. But the King’s armor was too heavy and too big for David. Instead, David picked up his trusty sling and found five smooth stones from a nearby stream. Clutching the sling, he approached Goliath.

Goliath laughed when he saw David, a boy with no armor or sword. But David wasn’t scared. He said, “You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty!”

Then, with all his might, David swung the sling and let loose one of the stones. Zoom! The stone flew through the air faster than a bird, straighter than an arrow, and hit Goliath right in the middle of his forehead. The giant stumbled and fell to the ground with a great thud. David had done it! He defeated Goliath not with strength but with faith, courage, and trust in his God.

The Israelites cheered and celebrated, for their young hero had saved them. David showed everyone that no matter how small or young you are, you can overcome challenges that appear too big with faith and courage.

Learning Point: Remember, my brave little friends, even if you’re small, you can face big challenges with courage and faith. Just like David, you have your gifts and strengths. Use them, believe in yourself, and always have faith.

Verse to Remember: 1 Samuel 17:50 – “So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philistine and killed him.”

So, think of David next time you face a ‘giant’ problem. Remember, it’s not how big you are on the outside that counts, but how brave and faithful you are on the inside. Who knows what giants you can conquer with faith, courage, and God at your side?
