The death of any child is tragic, but the recent tragic death of 10-year-old Alex “AJ” Wise Jr. serves as a stark reminder of the ethics surrounding the morality of knowledge. When faced with the realities of harm, an inherent responsibility to act arises. This sentiment is echoed in the biblical verse James 4:17: “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” This underscores the moral obligation to address and rectify wrongs when we become aware of them.
In this light, the community grieves the loss of 10-year-old Alex “AJ” Wise Jr., whose life was tragically ended in Midland, Texas, due to a hit-and-run by Rogelio Ortiz-Olivas, a man previously deported five times. This event on February 8 has triggered a deep reflection on immigration and public safety policies.
Ortiz-Olivas faces charges including drunk driving and fleeing the scene, highlighting ongoing debates around border security. The outpouring of support for Alex’s family, with over $24,000 raised for funeral expenses, reflects the community’s solidarity and compassion.
Amidst this tragedy, the dialogue on immigration reform intensifies, propelled by figures like Rep. Troy Nehls and the poignant statistics revealing over 12 million migrants crossing our porous border in the past three years, of which 2 million were “got-aways” escaping the system and running freely around America. Compound this with the fact these illegal migrants who cross undetected, unmonitored, and unknown are difficult to find, but kudos to our overworked Border Patrol and law enforcement for catching 520,000 migrants being removed or returned in the period between May 12, 2023, and January 31, 2024. Keep in mind that law enforcement is spread thin to catch those migrants who should not be here anyway, which means crime is up in other areas. The migrant crisis has reached a critical point, evidenced by the impeachment of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for alleged inaction.
This unfortunate incident compels us to confront uncomfortable truths and reassess our moral and ethical responsibilities.
